JAMBOREE 2010
JAMBOREE 2010 Festival, which takes place in May 28 - 29 in the town of Strakonice, offers performances of the best Czech and foreign music bands and soloists. Thus after 18 passed years of having annual performances of bluegrass music of the top European level reminds that Strakonice town has become a traditional organizer and promoter of the mentioned musical genre. And not even this year programme will vary from the standard scheme of the festival, where not only bluegrass and country music, but related genres from different views including wide range of participants will be presented to the visitors and its loyal followings as well.
The festival, which is basically set on the traditional bluegrass genre, has been widening its range and the programme offers showcases of a number of bands and ensembles that have relinquished the traditional orientation. The audience, therefore, has the possibility to enjoy performing bands presenting country, latest acoustic music, modern bluegrass and several other musical displays of contemporary music. The actual offer is not influenced by the lack of new ideas or creativity, on the contrary, the structure of individual programmes will enable the visitors and the audience to compare a wide range of top bands and their different approaches and attitudes towards bluegrass and country music genre. It's no doubt that a number of performing bands fall outside the relevant compartments or just hint the country style, however, this new trend of multi-genre musical display is basically a worldwide phenomenon. And even this year festival will not vary. On the contrary, foreign performing guests from the USA will, except the traditional bluegrass, present a hint of folk-rock as well. However, I am convinced that even those performances will be appreciated by the loyal followings with the enthusiasm as well.
Organizational up-dates
Last year, the audiences to the festival did not have the opportunity to appreciate the accomplished reconstruction of the open-air cinema including the castle surroundings due to "cats and dogs" weather that basically didn't enable to take a walk or to even leave the Cultural House premises, actually. Therefore, we presume that the new open-air premises will have its bluegrass premiere during this year festival.
All concerts during the festival will have again traditional form of a showcase and the individual artists will be provided with longer time schedule for their performances compared to previous years. Such measure, which will be appreciated not only by the musicians but the audience as well, will logically bring less number of participating performers during the individual concerts.
This year, we want to provide the spectators and visitors to the festival with a detailed course of events by means of a stationary as well as mobile camera which will shoot every movement of the artists' fingers. The same projection screen was displayed in the Cultural House last year. However, the busy foyer didn't offer the right conditions and didn't meet the expectations. The open-air cinema premises will be cut out for such form of zooming of what is happening on the stage in details.
Inseparable part of the organizer offer is to present audiovisual information shown on the projection screen (spots, clips, slides, etc.).
Programme up-dates
We intend to utilize the horse-race premises, which haven't been used for the last two years, in order to throw an entertaining programme for children and their parents. It will be accompanied by horse riding, attractions and shows and music, of course, and will take place on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
Due to the fact that the festival is held during an ordinary weekend (moreover during the election campaign), we are forced to leave the programme structure in a traditional shape. Unfortunately, about 30 hours, during which the festival is held, doesn't provide many options.
During Friday main program, which is held in the open-air cinema and starts at 19.30, experienced matadors as well as interesting progressive formations of artists will be presented to the audiences. The whole evening will be 'garnished' by foreign participants' performances, coincidentally all coming from the USA.
Saturday morning programme will be held on the third castle courtyard and during the traditional concert of BLUEGRASS SESSION No. 10, stunning bands coming from every corner of the whole country as well abroad will be presented. Almost ten music groups from the top bluegrass scene and bands and ensembles which are undoubtedly reaching the same top posts will show their performances during this almost 3-hour concert.
Saturday main concert will be naturally held on the stage of the open-air cinema and the whole range of magnificent bands will be presented starting at 16.00.
After the main concerts finish, the visitors to the festival can return to the castle courtyard, where JAM SESSION, an optional entertaining programme in the spirit of bluegrass and country music with refreshment will be held starting Friday and Saturday midnight until morning hours, in case of good mood and pleasant atmosphere.
Dramaturgy of this year festival 2010
The dramaturgy of this year festival wants to provide interesting formations of musicians who perform mostly in different groups and configurations. We can talk about the musicians' fellowship around Ralph Schut and Ondra Kozák, stunning artists from G Runs n' Roses and Křeni bands. The same guys will appear on Friday evening with an easy-going jam session character.
Other musicians, such as well-known mandolinest Radim ZENKL and Jaroslav SAMSON LENK, an excellent guitarist, composer, singer and permanent member of HOP TROP band, fall within the similar scope.
Comparable category offers musicians and performers linked to Eliška PTÁČKOVÁ who has risen for the last three years to become an elite Czech singer. Her partners on the stage are the best and picked instrumentalists who our country can be proud of.
Robert Křesťan with his band DRUHÁ TRÁVA will ensure the Czech national scene. And together with a band COP, they will come up with an untraditional climax of this year festival. POUTNÍCI will surely enjoy their performance, as the celebrations of 40th anniversary of the band activities will take place at the very same Jamboree Festival.
Others worth mentioning participants to the festival are bands RELIÉF, MODROTISK, BLANKET, FÁMY and the younger ones such as G -Runs ´n Roses and KŘENI, BLACK JACK, or unconventional formation CIMPR CAMPR, blues duo Beňa & Ptaszek, or solo performance of Czech-American Jan Zellen and a wide range of others. During the 2-day festival, more than 30 top bands from the Czech Republic and abroad will show their piece of art.
Special guests to the festival
We are happy to say that after a "lean" last year festival we succeeded in inviting truly brilliant musicians who will surely be embellishment of the festival and their names will be added to a long list of special and genuine guests during the past years.
During the Friday evening concert, Věra MARTINOVÁ will be performing with her guest who is an American guitarist Jamie MARSHALL. Their performance will be accompanied by a group of brilliant musicians P.R.S.T. who will also have their individual show, of course.
During the very same evening, the main special guest festooned with Grammy awards, Viktor KRAUSS (USA) and his fellows will have his first performance presenting his best pieces from both of his albums, about which it is said by the critics that they masterly integrate bluegrass, jazz, country and film soundtracks together.
Viktor Krauss will arrive in Strakonice with a number of current big-timers of Nashville musical scene - guitarists Todd Lombardo (Nickel Creek, Russ Barenberg, Taylor Shift) and Steve Walsh (working with Norah Jones) or drummer Robert Crawford (Missy Raines & the New Hip). Vocal turns on Krauss's albums by Lyle Lovett, an Indian singer Shweta Jhaveri or singers Shawn Colvin and Alison Krauss will be presented in Strakonice by and divided between an American singer Jill Walsh (Shawn Colvin...) and a guitarist Todd Lombardo
During Saturday programme held in the castle courtyard, BLUEGRASS SESSION No. 10 with Viktor Krauss will invite Luboš Malina and Luboš Novotný and together with the formation from the previous evening will come up with their stunning performance emphasizing on acoustic repertoire with strong influence of bluegrass, naturally.
Among the main stars of Saturday concert held in the open-air cinema Robert Křesťan with Druhá Tráva and Cop will showcase as well as other guests such as Jill WALSH and Steve WALSH who will invite and perform with Czech-American band NOVEMBER 2nd. Their performance will be tuned into rather folk-rock style with elements of American country music. (for further information go to link Special Guests)
In the same way as it was in the last years, this year we have been working intensively with Dutch Association of bluegrass music (EBMA) which is the main organizer and promoter of European World of Bluegrass, whose 13th annual takes place prior to our festival in several places throughout Holland.
